Training for Apollo 10
John Young trains for his flight aboard Apollo 10. At one point NASA considered the option of holding the flight until a lighter lunar module was available, allowing Apollo 10 to be first to land on the moon. Commander Tom Stafford preferred to fly the mission as planned, as a full test of the lunar module in lunar orbit, to better ensure the safety of future missions. NASA photo.

A Last Close Look
The Apollo 10 command module, whimsically given the call sign “Charlie Brown” in honor of the Peanuts comic strip by Charles Schulz (the lunar module was “Snoopy”), hovers above the surface of the moon. Tom Stafford and Gene Cernan flew the lunar module as close as 47,000 feet away from the lunar surface. NASA photo.
