A Message From Space
The Apollo 7 mission marked the first time that astronauts were sent into space after the tragic Apollo 1 fire in January, 1967. Mercury veteran Wally Schirra made his last flight in space during the mission; he is seen here joking for the camera during a live television broadcast from the Apollo capsule, with fellow crew member Donn Eisele. The Apollo Overhaul
Apollo spacecraft and systems underwent a major redesign following the Apollo 1 fire. In many ways, the great achievements of the Apollo program, including the lunar landings, the safe return of Apollo 13, and the Skylab and ASTP projects, all owe some portion of their safe passage to the changes that were instituted because of the Apollo 1 tragedy.
